The Challenges of Homelessness Among Youth
Running a local or state government comes with its fair share of challenges, and one of the most pressing issues we face is caring for our constituents under 18. These young individuals, a vital part of our communities, confront unique hardships, none more dire than homelessness. Witnessing young people experiencing such adversity is heart-wrenching, but we must equip ourselves with the knowledge to provide effective solutions, support, and service awards to those who work tirelessly to address these critical issues.
Causes of youth homelessness
Understanding the root causes of youth homelessness is the first step toward addressing this critical issue. While each child and teen is a unique individual, many homeless youth have similar origin stories:
Poverty: Families living in poverty may struggle to pay rent or mortgages, ultimately leaving them without a stable home.
Family Conflict: Tensions within a family can drive young people to run away for safety and stability.
Abuse: The heartbreaking reality is that some youth face abuse within their homes, forcing them to flee to protect themselves.
Mental Health: Family conflicts and abuse can lead to mental health crises, pushing youth to seek refuge elsewhere.
Substance Abuse: Substance abuse disorders can trap young people, compelling them to leave their homes and become homeless.
Consequences of youth homelessness
Often, the issues that cause homelessness are exacerbated by a youth’s new conditions. If they were underfed at home due to poverty or abuse, they would not likely find better or adequate nutrition out on the streets. Homeless youth experience physical and sexual abuse much more than the rest of the population. There are few protections for those living on the streets, and youth simply cannot protect themselves in the ways that homelessness often requires. Beyond these difficulties, homeless youth are unlikely to continue their education, which increases their chances of participating in illegal activities to make money. Things like sex work and drug dealing become necessary options, often leading to run-ins with the law.
Challenges of helping homeless youth
Addressing youth homelessness presents unique challenges:
Distrust of Law Enforcement: Youth involved in illegal activities might distrust law enforcement, hindering their access to help when needed.
Law Enforcement Training: Police and other law enforcement agencies may lack the specialized training to assist homeless youth effectively.
Funding: Adequate funding is essential to improve the conditions for homeless youth, offering resources such as job training, mental health, and substance abuse treatment.
Role of the community
The solution for youth homelessness starts with the community they live in. If government officials work to increase budgetary spending, cities and states can build affordable and/or transitional housing for homeless youth, which helps them get off the street for good. Other programs, like the ones mentioned earlier, help put homeless youth in a position of knowledge and power to better their situations. Such advocacy and resources start with awareness. If we continue to teach ourselves about the challenges that homeless youth face, we can build an understanding that leads to support for such programs. Doing so will save lives and provide safety to our most vulnerable.
